Fairfield, CA Community Information

Fairfield was founded in 1859 by captain Robert H. Waterman, and named after his former hometown of Fairfield, Connecticut. It is the home of Travis Air Force Base and has a population of almost 109,000.  Fairfield is a vibrant community with respect for its heritage and a vision for the future. The history of Fairfield stretches back five to six thousand years. The earliest native inhabitants of the Fairfield area were the Indians who settled in the Rockville and Green Valley areas and are some of the oldest Indian settlements in Northern California.

Travis Air Force Base was annexed to Fairfield on March 30, 1966 and was one of the major departure points for military units heading for combat in Vietnam.  It remains an active military base and a major employer in the area along with such notable companies as Jelly Belly Candy Company and Copart Auto.

The City’s location, natural amenities, and abundant land sites are some of the attributes that make Fairfield a great place to live. The population of Fairfield has increased from 3,100 people in 1950 to its present population of over 100,000. The City and surrounding areas are expected to continue to flourish as one of the most desirable urban growth centers in the Bay Area.

Fairfield is home of the Suisun Valley AVA - one of the wine world's best-kept secrets. The Valley's winemaking dates back to the late 1800s and planting have steadily increased over the last 20 years and surged during the 1990s and became a sought after producer for the three hottest varietals — cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay and merlot by wine makers in nearby Napa and Sonoma.  Now a days, many different varieties of wine grapes are grown in the Valley. And, Suisun Valley wineries are earning a reputation on their own — growing, producing, and selling premium, award winning wines. Some top producing wineries in the area include Wooden Valley Winery and Vezer Family Vineyards.  Suisun Valley lies within the ultra-premium growing area known as the California North Coast which includes Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino counties.

The racial makeup of the city is 51% Caucasian, 22% Hispanic, 15% Black or African American, 11% Asian, 1% Other.  The median Family income is $55,503.
